Common Questions

What do you do at Orientation?

Orientation is designed to help start your SF State experience and set you up for success. The program features a variety of social, transitional and preparatory programming such as educational sessions, advising & course registration workshops and student social events.

Students who participate in orientation will have the opportunity to connect with clubs & organizations, find on-campus jobs, register for classes with the help of an advisor and meet other new Gators!

Family members, guests and other supporters who attend Orientation will have their own, unique, side-by-side experience to learn all there is to know to be supportive.

Can I leave Orientation early?

New Student & Family Programs understands that life is complicated and you and/or your family may be pulled away from Orientation before it's over.

We encourage all participants to stay with us (or stay connected remotely) until the program comes to a close. This will ensure that you've had enough time to ask all your questions and register for a full schedule of classes for the upcoming semester.

If you need to leave Orientation early, please kindly let us know so we can continue to support you if your absence causes you to miss key transition activities which take place during Orientation.

When can I register for classes?

All new incoming students will register for classes at their scheduled Orientation session.

After you sign up for Orientation, you'll see an "enrollment appointment" populate in your Student Center account for the same day as your Orientation.

While at orientation, you'll participate in an academic overview and registration workshop to learn which classes you need to take and how to register for them. After that, you'll register for classes with the help of your advisors.

If you're attending Orientation on campus, you'll register for classes in one of our computer labs. If you're attending remotely, you'll register for classes on your own computer while on Zoom with your advisors.

Is Orientation required?

Orientation is not a required transition program for new students. However, it is highly encouraged.

Students who choose not to attend Orientation will not be able to register for classes or see an advisor until open enrollment begins in August.

How do I access my Remote Orientation?

Your Zoom link was sent to you and your registered guests via email. Detailed instructions on how to set up Zoom can be found in your e-Confirmation packet, confirmation emails and within this app on the "Get Ready" section via the home page.

What is your phone number?

Our office can be contacted by phone at (415) 338-3060.

How can I change my Orientation date?

We understand that situations arise all the time and the initial date that you chose for your New Student Orientation Session may not work for you anymore. There are two different ways in which you can change your Orientation Session Date.

  1. You can log back in to your Orientation profile and select a new session date the same way you initially chose a date.

  2. If you are not seeing any other dates when you log in to the system it is most likely all sessions have reached their capacity. If that is the case, you can either email us (nsp@sfsu.edu) or drop by our Zoom Help Desk where a member of our team will be able to help switch your session to one that works for you.
